Whenever you go to rent a car, you will almost certainly be required to show them your valid drivers license, and also proof that you currently carry car insurance. Most of the time, your regular car insurance will cover you while you are driving a rental car, but this is something to watch for and to check into first. There are also exclusions to this -- for example, even if you have regular car insurance on your own car, if you are renting the car for business purposes, your regular car insurance may not cover you. If this is the case, and it is certainly something worth looking into to verify, then you should probably accept the insurance coverage that the car rental agency offers you.

Even if your current car insurance covers you while you are driving the rental car, make sure that you know that if you are in an accident, you are still responsible for the deductibles that apply as if it were your own car. Although you cannot of course anticipate an accident, this is something to keep in mind. If you have a $500 deductible on your regular car, then you would also have a $500 deductible on the rental car in case of a problem. If you are unsure, you may choose to accept the insurance coverages offered by the car rental agency.

Before you get in the rental car and drive it away, take the time to walk around it and look for problems. If you see scratches and dents, make sure those are noted on your rental agreement, so that when you bring it back, they cannot claim that you did that. Keep your rental paperwork in the glovebox of the rental car, because you will need that in case you are stopped or pulled over for any reason.
