Shipping a car from one location to another has become very common these days, and in fact with the price of gas, plus hotel nights for long distances, can actually be cheaper than driving it to the new location yourself. But before you sign any shipping contract, make sure you know how long it will take, so that you do not find yourself without any vehicle at all at your destination, and also be sure to check about what kind of insurance the shipper will be proving as your car is in their hands in transit.

While your normal car insurance may cover the car while it is in transit, it is much better to check with your insurance company before signing the shipping agreement documents. If they do not cover it while it is in the hands of the shipper, then be very sure you understand all the coverages that the shipper will provide. Sometimes the cost of insurance is extra, so also be sure you understand the difference between the shipping costs and the cost of insurance. Go through the fine print of the insurance contract to make sure you understand all the fine print, what their exclusions are, what is covered, and most importantly, what is NOT covered under WHAT circumstances.

If the shipper's coverage is not something you are comfortable with, you have the right to ask for a revision. That does not mean they will grant your request for a revision, or even that they have the power to do so, but it is worth asking.

Another option is to check to see if, assuming your regular insurance does not cover your car and the shipper's insurance is either inadequate or you are not comfortable with it, you also have another car insurance option -- check to see if you can get a "rider" policy for the duration of time that your car will be in the shipper's control. A rider policy is designed to have a very short lifespan and to specifically cover something that a normal policy would not cover. Your regular insurance agent should be able to give you a quote on that.
